Training Problems aren’t always Training Problems

Training Problems aren’t always Training Problems

How often does L&D receive a request that sounds something like this?

“We need training on this.”

Sometimes training is exactly what’s needed. But before we start building slides, courses, job aids, or learning experiences, there is a more important question to answer:

What do the employees need to do differently?

That question changes the conversation.

Starting with performance helps us make better decisions about what people need to learn, what they need to practice, and how we will know whether the learning worked.

For those who are newer to L&D, this is one of the most important shifts you can make: Don’t start with what you need to teach. Start with what people need to do.

That thinking is at the heart of Performance First™: A practical approach to training that works.

I recently made the book available on Kindle for $12.99 to make it easier to access. It is also included with Kindle Unlimited, so members can read it at no additional cost.

If you are working through these questions in your own organization, I hope it gives you a practical framework you can use. And if you have any questions or tough problems to solve, I’m happy to talk it through with you.
